Prostitution is commonly defined as the exchange of sex for money. People who engage in prostitution provide sexual services in return for payment. A related question is whether exchanging sex for material items other than cash should also be considered prostitution. Some people say yes, others say no. That debate, however, can be left for another time.
Prostitution is often described as the “world’s oldest profession,” and many believe it has existed in almost every society for a very long time.
A major question, however, is whether prostitution is harmful to society. Those who argue that it is harmful give several reasons.
Some believe prostitution contributes to the spread of sexually transmitted infections such as HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea, and syphilis. From this perspective, prostitution poses a serious public health risk.
Others argue that prostitution involves the exploitation of women and girls. They point out that some women are forced into sex work by powerful individuals or criminal networks. In such cases, women may be threatened with violence or punishment if they try to leave.
Another argument is that prostitution is often linked to other crimes. Critics say it is commonly associated with drug use and drug dealing, robbery, assault, and even murder.
Some people also view prostitution as immoral. They believe sexual activity should only take place within marriage and argue that widespread prostitution can lead to moral decline and the breakdown of society.
On the other hand, some people do not see prostitution as a serious social problem. They argue that adults should be free to choose sex work without fear of arrest, prosecution, or punishment. They compare prostitution to other occupations that depend on the body, such as sports, where athletes earn money using their physical abilities.
Some clients of sex workers argue that prostitution provides a legal and safe way for them to satisfy sexual desires, especially if they believe they cannot attract the kind of partner they want.
Many sex workers themselves argue that they are simply providing a service that is wanted. They say sex work can be a mutual agreement between two consenting adults and that society should respect their choice.
Some sex workers also claim that their services help reduce sexual crimes such as rape, incest, and defilement by providing an outlet for people seeking sex.
Whatever one’s personal views on prostitution, it is important to note that in many countries prostitution—or activities linked to it—is illegal. As such, individuals are expected to obey the laws of their country, regardless of their personal opinions.
